Technical Deep Dive · InternetGuard

Productionizing an Android VPN firewall security app

InternetGuard was a production VPN firewall app for Android that allowed users to control which apps could access the internet. My contribution focused on stabilizing production issues, improving VPN lifecycle behavior, handling Android compatibility, adding visibility through analytics/crash tracking, and improving the app experience around themes, localization, low-end devices, and promotion flows.

Contribution

Improving reliability in an app where background behavior and Android versions matter

Stability

Production bug fixing

Worked on crash fixes, production defects, and behavior issues that affected user trust in a privacy/VPN firewall app.

Platform

VPN lifecycle handling

Focused on service behavior, lifecycle handling, and Android compatibility for sensitive background flows.

Visibility

Analytics and crash tracking

Added product and reliability visibility through analytics events and crash monitoring.

Challenges & Resolution

Most of the work was about making a sensitive utility app feel dependable

Challenge

VPN firewall apps fail trust quickly when lifecycle behavior is inconsistent.

Resolution

Focused on lifecycle/service stability and Android compatibility work so the app could behave more predictably across devices and OS versions.

Benefit

Reduced friction in core security flows and improved confidence in the product experience.

Challenge

Production issues needed better visibility.

Resolution

Worked with crash tracking and analytics events to make failures and user behavior easier to identify after release.

Benefit

Made quality improvements less reactive and gave the team clearer signals for what to fix next.

This case study is intentionally scoped: my focus was on production maintenance, optimization, and scaling of this VPN firewall in a demanding Android security context where background behavior, OS compatibility, crashes, localization, and device performance directly affect the user's trust.

Additionally, I drove user acquisition by implementing an in-app cross-promotion campaign inside this VPN firewall application to cross-promote our suite of security products, helping drive downloads for our apps from a baseline of 200 to 10,000+ and steadily increasing.

Outcome

A stable, optimized utility serving a massive user base

By stabilizing VPN lifecycle events, introducing multi-language localization, optimizing UI rendering for low-end devices, and slashing production crashes, the app maintained its strong position in the security utilities market.

Known result: Maintained and optimized the production VPN firewall app serving 1M to 1.5 million downloads.
